Expert Critical Care
At HCA Virginia, our intensive care units (ICU) are designed to provide advanced care to seriously ill or injured patients. Our specially trained staff provides close, constant attention to individuals during their time in critical care. HCA Virginia's intensive care teams include:
- Physicians
- Nurses
- Respiratory therapists
- Nutritionists
- Physical therapists
- Pharmacists
- Social workers
- Clergy
- Case Managers
Our ICUs provide care that goes beyond typical inpatient support in two ways:
- Concentrated care. ICU doctors and nurses are specially trained to care for the most ill or injured individuals. Patients and families at HCA Virginia experience attentive, compassionate and expert care around the clock.
- Advanced technology. At HCA Virginia, we're committed to using the very best technologies and equipment to help our patients. For example, we use a remote monitoring system (eICU WATCH) in each of our intensive care units that adds an extra layer of support. This monitoring system does not replace onsite caregivers, but provides an even higher level of attentiveness that often results in shorter hospital stays and better outcomes.
Specialized ICU Services
We provide patients with more specialized intensive care through our ICUs dedicated to:
- Surgical recovery
- Brain injuries such as bleeding, stroke, trauma, tumors or comas
- Heart problems such as very high or very low blood pressure, abnormal heartbeats or heart attack
- Lung problems such as acute asthma attacks, severe pneumonia or pulmonary embolism (blood clots in the lung)
- Kidney problems and kidney transplant
- Pediatric intensive care
- Neonatal intensive care
As an intermediate transition between intensive care and traditional inpatient care - our neuroscience and stroke - cardiovascular and surgical specialties offer step down units of care.
Visiting Patients in the ICU
We understand how important the support of family is to a patient's recovery, and we encourage families to visit. Check with our ICU nursing staff for specific visiting hours and policies.
