For those with chronic kidney disease, HCA Virginia's nationally recognized Virginia Transplant Center offers hope for a healthier future.

Through transplantation, a donated human organ is implanted into another person to restore health and prolong life. For someone whose kidneys are no longer working, a successful kidney transplant offers the promise of a better quality of life and longer life expectancy than is possible with kidney dialysis.

The Virginia Transplant Center at HCA Virginia's Henrico Doctors' Hospital is a regional leader in the field of kidney transplantation, offering:

  • Virginia's community-based transplant program, established more than 20 years ago
  • Experienced surgical specialists who have performed more than 1,000 kidney transplants
  • A laparoscopic living donor program that makes it possible to remove kidneys from most donors using minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery, resulting in less pain and a quicker recovery
  • A paired donor exchange program in affiliation with the National Kidney Registry

Kidney transplant evaluation and classes are available at Henrico Doctors' Hospital, LewisGale Medical Center in Salem, Virginia, and Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center in Fredericksburg, Virginia. All transplants are performed at Henrico Doctors' Hospital in Richmond.

The Virginia Transplant Center's multidisciplinary team includes highly experienced transplant surgeons, registered nurses, nurse practitioners, a transplant pharmacist, transplant dietitians and social workers experienced in caring for kidney transplant patients.
