The Complex Care Program at Retreat Doctors' Hospital is the only one of its kind in Virginia. Our program prepares patients with severe illnesses and injuries, and their families, for a return home or a transition to a rehabilitation care center. You or your loved one will receive individualized medical care and specialized therapies designed to help re-learn basic tasks and tackle larger challenges. The result is a better outcome, a shorter stay in the hospital and a more positive recovery and rehabilitation.

Conditions We Treat
We provide care to patients with acute medical needs and conditions, including:
- Brain injury and coma recovery
- Pulmonary disease management
- Complex wound care
- Post-surgical complications
- Stroke and orthopedic care
- Peritoneal and hemodialysis
- Catastrophic illness or multiple-trauma injuries
- Intravenous therapy and parenteral nutrition
- Non-weight-bearing injuries
Our Complex Care Team
Our team includes a variety of specialists, which means you benefit from many experts working together to develop a care plan specifically tailored to your needs. All team members attend weekly team conferences, which are open to patients, their families and, when needed, insurance case members.
The treatment team includes medical direction provided by an internist, a specialist in internal medicine, and a physiatrist, a doctor who works in physical medicine and rehabilitation. Other specialists may include neurologists, pulmonologists and plastic and reconstructive surgeons. All of our doctors are board-certified, which means they have committed to additional training and testing in their fields to provide you with the highest standards of care.
The team also consists of:
- Nurses (with one nurse for every three patients)

- Physical, occupational and speech therapists
- Respiratory therapists

Referral and Insurance
If you or someone you love needs our care, we provide onsite assessments at no cost. We also verify insurance coverage and help negotiate the types of treatment your insurance company will cover. Please note that Medicare and Medicaid do not cover Complex Care Services.
